What lurks beneath? In Rome, it’s nothing less than the history of the great metropolis. Beneath modern Rome is a city as dark and still as modern Rome is luminous and energetic. Immerse yourself in these intimate and reverential places with our English-speaking guides!
Nowhere is time more present than during a visit to Basilica of San Clemente, where you can journey back centuries by stepping from the ground-level 12th-century basilica down to the fourth-century church below and then on to the second-century pagan temple, an artificial grotto decorated with small fragments of pumice stone.
Below that are residential foundations dating to the Roman Republic and the soothing sound of a subterranean river. From there, we will venture to the Domitilla Catacombs, among the oldest in the city and one of the few still containing bones. The last stop with your Do You Explore guide is the Capuchin Monks Crypt, also known as “The Bone Church.” Here, the skeletal remains of 3,700 friars are arranged as a sort of macabre art. It is a place to ponder the big questions. “What you are, we once were,” a sign reads. “What we are, you someday will be.”
As always, your Do You Explore guide will spirit you to the front of the line at all the attractions. To truly see Rome from an enlightening perspective, explore its dark places. Reserve your spot in one of our small group tours now.
